If you love a good farming sim but want one with more action and less coziness, it can be hard to even know where to begin looking. ‘Cozy’ and ‘farming sim’ seem to go hand-in-hand these days, but Super Farming Boy is a farming sim that doesn’t just break the mold, it smashes it.

Super Farming Boy is a bizarre farming sim game with Cuphead-style old-school animation and combo-based harvesting. It sounds really strange to describe, and it is, but there’s something addictive about the gameplay loop, and it packs a punch in terms of challenge.

It’s been out on Android and iOS since March, and has been available on Epic Games Store since April, and now it’s coming to Steam, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch on August 12. Even the release schedule is chaotic, which is definitely inkeeping with the themes of the game itself.

Everything in Super Farming Boy is chaos in video game format, from the fact that you are the tool (they pop out of your head) to the seasons themselves. It’s like farming in fast forward, where the weather is trying to kill you, and the seeds are alive and wandering in the woods.

Your mom has been kidnapped, and Korpo®©TM wants an extortionate amount of money to get her back in one piece, but you also need to contend with the deckbuilder-ish aspect of unlocking and upgrading your tools so that you can survive everything the various seasons try to throw at you.

I’ll be honest, Super Farming Boy is a very difficult game to explain without sounding like you’ve had a fever dream and mistaken it for reality, but it’s very real and incredibly entertaining despite (or perhaps because of) the insanity that plays out on your screen.

Setting up your crops in a way that lets you relish in the combo playing out when you harvest them is insanely satisfying, and figuring out the best way to contend with each bizarre weather system is rewarding in its own way. It’s odd, but it’s the good kind of odd, and that makes it special.

You can play Super Farming Boy on Android and iOS right now. It’s also already available on Epic Games Store.

  • PC (via Steam, Epic Store, and Itch.io)
  • Xbox Series X|S

You can also play a demo of the game for those who are new to it, which you definitely should play if you want to truly appreciate what I’ve attempted to explain above, on Steam, Epic, Itch.io, and Xbox.
