If you’re a fan of point-and-clicks and yearning for some Fall-themed adventures to go on, Itch.io has a fair few that are worth your time. While there are many, perhaps none are more worth playing than Blackout

Blackout is a spook-filled Halloween treat of a point-and-click adventure by FRESH that’s played in-browser on Itch.io. The game is set in a house where nothing is as it seems, and reality is definitely skewed. If you want to speed run through it, this guide will take you from start to finish.

Some things to remember:

  • This guide completely ignores any optional clicks, and you should fully explore your surroundings to avoid missing out on any humor or fun moments. All items in this guide have been highlighted in bold
  • Blackout is designed to be completed in one sitting, with no save function. If you refresh the page, you’ll lost progress and need to start from the beginning.
  • You also cannot skip ahead or miss parts of this walkthrough, because everything needs to be completed. For example, you cannot open the safe until you’ve discovered the code in-game.

How to get into the house and downstairs

Upstairs of the house in Blackout

Once you’re on the balcony, interact with the skull near the railings to move it and discover the Key to the sliding doors. Use the Key on the door to unlock it, then head inside to the bedroom. This is where the strangeness begins, although there’s nothing you can immediately do inside the bedroom, so head into the hallway and go into the room on the right of the back wall.

In here, you can interact with each painting, but it’s too dark to see anything, so you’ll need to figure out how to get the lights back on before you can fully understand this room. While you’re in here, pick up the Stool by the window, then go back into the hallway and into the final remaining upstairs room.

In this room, use the stool in front of the bookshelf at the back, then click on the item on Cat Bell on top of the shelves to pick it up, before picking the Stool back up as well. You can then leave this room and use the Cat Bell on the cat that’s blocking the top of the stairs. The cat will run after the bell, leaving you free to venture downstairs.

As soon as you get to the downstairs foyer, take the Lighter from the table next to the stairs, then head through the door on the left to enter the kitchen. Put the Stool down to the right of the oven, and use it to reach the red item inside a jar on the shelf to get some Beef Jerky in your inventory.

Leave the kitchen through the door on the back wall and talk to the person with a knife going through their head. They’ll request nicotine, so you need to find some cigarettes. Your first thought might be to pick up the packet from the table next to the stairs, but it’s empty, so you’ll need to head upstairs to the original bedroom you entered. Interact with the bed covers close to the ashtray to flip them back and find a pack of Cigarettes underneath.

Head back downstairs and give the Cigarettes to the guy in the dining room, and he will ask for the Lighter that you’ve already picked up, so you can give that to him too. Before lighting up his smoke, he’ll remove the Smeared Knife from his head and hand it to you, adding it to your inventory.

While you’re in the dining room, pick up the Empty Mug from the left side of the table.

How to get a drink for the mummy

Mummy in Blackout

Follow the doors until you find what appears to be a mummy sitting in an armchair, and interact with it. They’ll ask for a drink, and cryptically tell you that you can get one from the bathtub.

Go through the door on the back of this room, and you’ll find a door that’s taped up along the opening edge. Use the Smeared Knife to cut through this tape, then open the door and enter the bathroom. Interact with the shower curtain to pull it back, and then use the Empty Mug on the water inside.

The first time you do this, a person will jump out and prevent you from getting any water. Just give them the Beef Jerky you picked up earlier, and then use the Empty Mug on the water again to fill it with water and turn it into the Chalice of Malice.

Leave the bathroom and go through the left door, then use the Chalice of Malice on the mummy to quench their thirst, and they will give you an Old Key

How to get into the safe

The safe in Blackout

In the living room, if you interact with the painting on the wall by the door, you’ll find a safe hidden behind it. You’ll need a few things to get it open, the first of which can be found in the basement, through the door on the left wall of the kitchen.

The first time you go down here, you’ll be spooked by something that crawls out of the chest on the right-hand wall. Don’t worry, you don’t need to interact with it just yet, but you do need to pick up the Crowbar from the golf bag next to the stairs.

Once you’ve got it, head back to the room where the mummy sits in the armchair, then use the Crowbar on the cupboard of the desk to get it open, revealing the code to the safe:

  • * 8795 #

Head back into the living room and click on the safe, then put this code in to unlock it and gain a Creepy Mask for your inventory. Interact with the mask within your inventory to put it on, then you can head back down to the basement to scare the creature from earlier.

How to find the hidden room

Once you’ve spooked the creature in the basement back into its box, the lid will close to reveal a hole in the wall. There’s some paper taped to the top of the box. Click on the Paper to pick it up, and then look at it through your inventory to reveal the following code:

  • 0925

Now, head back into the main hallway and you’ll notice a crack of light has appeared on the wall under the stairs. Use the Old Key on the grandfather clock to unlock it. You’ll need to set the clock to 9:25 (small hand on IX, big hand on V), as dictated by the Paper, revealing a door under the stairs.

Enter this door and go down into the hidden room, then interact with the door on the right side to figure out what’s really going on here. With all of the lights turned back on, you can now wander around the house and see things in a new light.
